Travel Talk: London!

Now that the flights and hotel are booked, it’s official – on May 15, we depart for London! It will be my second trip to the UK and Andy’s first. We will, of course, do quite a bit of seeing the sights and I hope hire a car to take a day trip up to Warwick Castle and make our way back to London via the picturesque Cotswolds. We’ll only be there four days and it’s going to be a whirlwind, to say the least. The itinerary is still be developed, and will probably change, but this is what where I am now:

  • British Library
  • Original double decker bus tour
  • Maybe Westminster Abbey

  • British Museum
  • Museum of London
  • Museum of Natural History
  • Maybe the Science Museum

  • Warwick Castle day trip
  • tea at a teahouse in the Cotswolds

  • Tower of London
  • Borough Market
  • London Aquarium

Wild cards

  • Kensington Palace
  • Kew Gardens
  • Hampton Court
  • Windsor Castle

I’m well aware there are all of the sights to see like Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, and Picadilly Circus, but in my experience, those places look exactly the same in person as they do in photos. Via the double decker bus tour, we’ll at least get to see a good bit of them in person without spending a bunch of time running from place to place. We can save a lot of time and see a lot of things on those tours, so that’s what we’ve decided to do.

I am really keen to really dive into some history, thus the emphasis on museums. I am most looking forward to and am most nervous about the Warwick Castle day trip. We can take a train right into Warwick station, but if we wanted to take a bit of time in the country, sort of like the scenic route via the Costwolds, the trip back into London would take longer, so it might be best to hire a car for the day. But how does that even happen? Do we need special driver’s licenses? Has anyone ever hired (rented) a car in the UK? Any advice? I’ve looked a bit online, but it’s hard to know what advice to take!

Does anyone have advice or suggestions on things to see or places to go, and importantly, good pubs? Let me know – I’m all ears!
